Just another day in the life of a blessed child

Spread the love like honey

I don't know what it was today. My friend Paula would probably say: "You must have showered in honey." That's her explanation for days that are the positive equivalent of a bad hair day- days when everyone seems to compliment you and you start to feel better and better. I had one of those today. The funniest thing about it is that it actually started as a bad hair day. My hair just wasn't looking right, but for some reason I still did not bother to wash it when I had my shower in the morning. Maybe I was in a rush, or maybe I just wanted to avoid having to blow-dry it, which I find a pain in the arse. Actually, I think I was half-asleep when I got into the shower and only noticed as I was getting dressed that my hair looked shit. So I put on a red beret, and then of course, seeing that I'm obsessed with colour-coordination, some other red accessories. After that, I was ready to rock my day.

I went into the city, got myself a big take-away coffee and hit my favourite fleamarket. I love fleamarkets so much that I would probably marry one if that was a viable option. I bought a few old tins (I know. I really don't need any more, but I can't help myself), a couple of necklaces, a leather bag, a book and two old picture frames. I had a long chat with one of the stallholders- an interesting old man who was Swiss but had grown up in India. When he heard that I was just starting out as a journalist, he told me that he knew I was going to be one of those brave journalists the world needs. And when I wanted to buy one of his books, he refused to take money for it, because he said it was such a pleasure to talk to me and he wanted to give me a present. So then I insisted to bring him a coffee, and he said, thank you, God bless you, although it was him who had started the being nice thing.

Next up, a woman with a big camera approached me and asked if she could take a couple of photos of me, because she loved my style, especially the red hat. I said, sure, go ahead, and gave her the biggest smile her camera had ever seen.

But that still wasn't enough of the good things. I had to go and see a concert at night to write an article about. It was fities' style rock n' roll, so the audience was a really mixed group of people of almost all ages. As I left the concert hall, a well-dressed guy, who was probably in his fifties, approached me and said: "Excuse me, can I pay you a compliment?" I said: "Sure, anytime." He looked at me and said: "You are a fascinating woman. Whatever it is you do, you will be very successful, I can tell. Have a wonderful evening." I smiled and said thank you. I was really shocked. But in a good way. The whole way home I had this big smile on my face. Who would have thought that bad hair days can turn out this good.

I'm a huge fan of random acts of kindness. They cost nothing, take almost no effort, yet make the world a better place. So in the name of world peace, dear boys and girls, I urge you, get amongst it. Speak up when you like something, smile, spread the love, be happy, don't hold back. I promise, it will make you feel good. And you might just turn someone's bad hair day into a honey day.

MY WISH FOR YOU IS THAT ALL OF YOUR DAYS ARE LIKE TODAY...

As a child of the Fifties, we make all people feel special because we had great music to make us feel good.
But your smile is captivating and makes others smile too...Keep smiling and all your days will be special.

You just put the biggest smile on my face! All I had to do was imagine you as you went about your day, and it just made me very happy.

Thank you, Bettina.

First up - you can bet your life every guy reading this is now imagining you covered in honey ;)

Second - I tried doing that once: telling people nice things if I thought they were true. Like I thought they looked pretty today, or I liked their outfit, or I liked talking to them, things like that. What I found was that it immediately put people on guard. Girls thought it was a come on; people I didn't know that well thought it was inappropriate; friends thought I was just being weird haha. It didn't prove too popular for me so I stopped doing it.

I guess it all comes down to time, place, and who. And culture too, I guess.

:)

And, lest we readers forget, you experienced this in central Europe, an area not leading the world in random acts of kindness. This makes your experience all the more special. So tell us about the concert....

it can't be a bad hair day if you don't at least scowl at someone. you did the right thing by wearing the red beret; nobody knew about the bad hair, and red radiates heat and confidence. i'm not saying the hat caused all the attention, of course, because knowing you, you were friendly and engaged in a positive way. doing something you like- the fleamarket- was undoubtedly a factor. and you are right again, dear bettina, a smile goes a long way. people respond to smiles, usually in a good way, by sharing good energy.
if somebody gives you a dirty look for smiling at them, smile even bigger to annoy them. that feels pretty good too.

Mystic- Thank you my friend... you are too kind. Which kind of fits the story again.

Callie- Glad to be of service, my dear. :-)

SJ- Really? If the guy who complimented me after the concert, for example, would have attempted to stick around or ask to buy me a drink or anything like that, I would have thought he was coming on to me. But because he just told me something nice and then left, it made my day. And friends who think you are weird for saying something nice don't sound like true friends. I have always found that a positive attitude has given me positive reactions... but as you say, I guess it depends on the situation and the people involved. You can tell me nice things anytime- I won't think you're weird. :-)

EM- "an area not leading the world in random acts of kindness"... Really? Is there statistics for that kind of thing? :-) What area would be leading, then, you think?

The concert was fun. The lead singer had a great voice and they put on a good show. Unfortunately, the background singers were not quite that great. Still, good fun.

Katie- Why, thank you Miss Katie! I like that song too- and how funny you should say that, as the band I saw last night was called "Tupelo Voices"... What a strange coincidence! I actually thought at first I might have mentioned that, but I didn't. Can you read minds?

Sera- Thank you... I always love your comments. And I know what you mean- I love being extra nice to grumpy people sometimes. Particularly if I'm actually serious about it and really do just feel so good that their grumpiness can't upset me, it annoys them. I like for them to realise that they are grumpy arses. And that they would have so much more fun if they decided to have a good time.

I'm not always so awfully cheerful though. But often. :-)

That is awesome. You must be very positive person to receive such a great day. I'm smiling just knowing a day like this exists.

I always try to smile and be nice, even if I don't really mean it. There is no point in pissing in peoples cheerios unless it is warranted.

That's a very interesting way of putting things. Maybe I'll give it a try today. This is the third post I have read today that deals with something of this nature. Maybe it's a sign.

Lol, what a charmed day. Where i come from its almost unheard of for someone you don't know to just walk up to you, give that kind of compliment, and then just stroll away. Hell i know if it happened to me i would be turning around looking for the camera or what the joke was. People are just not kind to each other in any meaningful way around here. Or maybe i just haven't found the cool part of town where they are all hiding. Could be.

Imogen- Thanks sweets. If nobody will shower you in random kindness, give me a bell and I will be more than happy to do it!

Avshar- Well, it's not exactely like this happens all the time here... But I do believe that there are good people anywhere you go. Maybe try a couple of random acts of kindness yourself and see what happens... Just keep them nice and light to begin with, so people won't freak out. :-)

Good for you Betts ... keep it up. I always treat grumpy people extra kindly to make them feel real awful about being grumpy. Sometimes it works and they put aside whatever is making them grumpy and respond nicely. It's hard to be grumpy at someone who refuses to be unhappy. Unfailing cheer just has to be responded to. Wearing red anything helps too ... I love red.

I think this country I live in does not top the list for people being ready to practice random acts of kindness. Perhaps the Swiss are a little different.
